Literature Text

Slowly, opening her eyes to the bright sunlight shining in her face, Mist got up and stretched. She looked at her small solar powered clock and screamed.
“I’m gonna be late!” She pulled a pair of blue jeans and a blue shirt out of a trash bag. After quickly changing, she grabbed her backpack and started to climb down the rope ladder.
When she got onto the ground, she grabbed the rope and threw it up, watching to make sure it wrapped around a branch before she took off running north. Once Mist got out of the woods and onto the sidewalk, she began to slow down, catching her breath. A group of teens her age were walking to school as well, just a few feet ahead of her. Mist followed them but lagged behind, too afraid to talk to them. They didn’t have to walk far until they reached the school.
“Wow. This place is huge.” Mist stared in awe at the building. “It’s at least two stories maybe even three.” She thought to herself.
Holding onto her backpack straps tighter, she started to walk through the double doors. Mist watched as groups of teens gathered beside lockers, all greeting old friends from last year.
“Guess I should go to the office,” Mist started walking towards where she thought was the front office before shortly realizing she was lost. “Crap.” Mist looked around but only saw strangers staring at her and laughing.
“What is she wearing? That top is so ugly.” Girls snickered. “I know right. And it looks like she’s never heard of a hair brush before.” Mist quickly turned with her head down. As she walked away, she bumped into someone and fell down.
“Hey wa-“ Mist quickly got up and ran away before the guy could finish his sentence. As Mist ran down the halls, she came across a sign that said “Front Office”. She followed the arrow and stood at the front desk.
“Yes?” A woman said. “Um, I’m new here.” Mist quietly stated, trying to brush her fingers through her tangled, red hair. The woman nodded and gave Mist some paperwork.
“What’s this?” “Just some papers your legal guardian needs to sign.” “Legal Guardian?” “Yes, parent, or whoever you’re living with. If it doesn’t get filled out then you can’t come to school. Since you are new, and we don’t have any records of you, you’ll have to leave and come back once all that is signed.” Mist scooped the papers up and walked out the door without a word.
When she got back home, she sat on her bed and stared at the wall. “What am I going to do? I doubt he’ll sign it….. No! He has to sign it. I’ll make him. I-I have to go to school, and interact with other people, I have to become normal. Besides, he owes me.”
Mist stood and climbed back down to the ground. She turned west and walked through the woods, coming to a stop in front of a rode. Looking both ways, she began to walk across. On the other side, she kept walking straight till she reached a house at the bottom of a big hill. Opening the shabby screen door, she walked to the back of the house and opened a door that led to the basement. A red portal sat at the end of the stairs. Mist took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she stepped through.
When she opened her eyes again, all she saw were red stones, monsters and fire. Carefully, avoiding the fire and monsters, she approached a tall, sharp pointed gate. A sign next to it read, “Welcome to Hell.” Mist pushed the gate open and was greeted by a short monster.
“What sin have you committed today young lady?” “None, I’m here to see him.” “Sorry, but the master is not here at the moment.” Mist glared at the short minion. “Why not?” She said through gritted teeth. “The Devil went down to Georgia.” Mist rolled her eyes. “You’ve got to be kidding me! Tell him to get his lousy butt down here right now. I swear, he is a no good jack-” “I’m afraid I can’t do that miss. And it would be nice if you wouldn’t talk so negatively of the master while he is away. Now, I can leave a message if you like.” “Fine.” Mist sighed as the monster pulled out a notepad. “Tell him his daughter needs him to sign some papers so she can start school.”
